This is why I can’t wait for California to fall off into the Pacific Ocean.
Shedding Light on American Idol “Unknowns”
January 30, 2008Like most of the country it seems, I enjoy the initial episodes of American Idol each year. Seeing people humiliate themselves is always a treat. After the initial tryouts, I lose interest and don’t watch again until the next season. And rarely do I make an effort to read up on contestants after they tryout. But upon trolling through the Interwebs this morning looking for a clip of one of my favorite Idol embarassments from the past, I stumbled across this gem. This site basically details what a fraud the American Idol competition has become. In short, the whole competition is pretty much staged due to the producers “stacking the deck” so to speak, with talent who are already on the cusp of breaking into the music industry.
Worst Fans in the NFL
January 24, 2008Just in case you needed any further proof that Philadelphia Eagles fans are trash, then here you go.
Hitler Even Follows the Cowboys
January 21, 2008Finally, somebody who understands my passion for the Dallas Cowboys.
Britney Spears Naked Again?
January 17, 2008That’s the latest news. At some point, can we all pu-lease stop paying attention to this troubled soul? I mean, seriously? This girl has had more public meltdowns than the Buffalo Bills of the 90s. Please make it stop…
RE: Go, Pack, Go…
January 17, 2008In other, related news, the sales of Natural Light, duct tape and Brandon Jacobs jerseys have tripled in New York the past 2 days. I guess there’s silver lining in every cloud…
Go, Pack, Go….
January 17, 2008If you needed any further proof that Packer fans (and pretty much everyone else in Wisconsin) are white trash, then here you go.
This story has all the essential elements of Northern life: domestic violence, drunks and crappy football.
Jason Garrett IS Really Smart
January 17, 2008And he proves it today. Why would you want to leave a winning organization with a young stud quarterback, a new stadium in two years, a fan base who loves you, a city full of beautiful people, and mild winters to rebuild a struggling franchise up North where you are surrounded by ugly people who have to bundle up because it’s negative zero 8 months out of the year?
Now we just have to see how many other coaches will be sticking around to enjoy the next few years of championships and how many are going to flock to Miami and Atlanta to be mired in mediocrity and frustration. I hope they talk it over with Garrett before making up their minds…
Cowboys Lose Asst. Coach Sparano
January 16, 2008Looks like Cowboys quarterbacks coach Tony Sparano just accepted the head coaching job in Miami. All I have to say is good luck with the Tuna. And if you want to come back, say in three weeks when you’re tired of Parcells, we’ll leave a light on for ya…
My Thoughts On The Cowboys
January 16, 2008Forgive me for taking a few days to collect my thoughts before posting on this topic. I had to wait out the mourning period, then give myself at least 24 hours for the pillowcases to dry from the pools of my tears that soaked my pillow each night, then I had to unload the revolver that I keep in my top desk drawer so as to not off myself in a moment of weakness. My point by point thoughts are below:
1. Marion Barber did not get tired in the second half on Sunday. The Giants defense focused more on stopping the run and putting pressure up front. There were definite holes in their secondary because of it, but Romo never had the time to exploit it.
2. I used to have a lot of respect for Patrick Crayton. I like a guy who runs his mouth (a little bit) and is able to contribute to his team. but, trash talking before a game, then being a main reason your team lost, then avoiding the press after the game is sorry. Just plain sorry.
3. On the other hand, I gained a lot of respect for T.O. and for Romo for their words after the game and for being willing to stand in front of the leering press and be held accountable for their play and the play of the team. That is what leaders do, and they are both valuable leaders for this team.
4. Wade Phillips has earned at least one more year. Yes, I know Jason Garrett might leave. But, if he does, and things fall apart here, he will be around in two or three years to be lured back to Texas. He likes it here, and will come back. Mark my words.
5. If Garrett leaves, the cowboys will hire Cam Cameron to be their next offensive coordinator. He knows the system, since he coupled with Phillips (one offensively and the other defensively) last year to take the Chargers to a 14-2 record. He knows how to get a good running back the ball (MBIII, see the success of LT in this system), and thanks to the New Jersey Con Man, Cameron is available.
6. I am excited about next year, and I am excited about the next five or six years with Romo at the helm. He WILL get more than a few playoff wins under his belt, remember he’s still kinda new to this whole playoff thing. I think he’s growing and showing more maturity each year. He is a winner and will lead Dallas to more than one super bowl in the future.
7. I could care less if Romo, Witten and Carpenter went to Bangladesh on their off weekend. Peyton Manning stayed at home and watched 30+ extra hours of film on San Diego and you see where it got him? Yeah, same place the Cowboys are right now. And I think the Colts were a better team this year. Just goes to show that different guys handle things different ways and there’s no right or wrong answer.
Anyway, feel free to sound off on my thoughts/opinions as I’m sure the other knuckleheads on this blog will do. Enjoy the rest of the playoffs. I’ll be in Mexico with Romo and Mark Riveira…
What’s Next…?
January 15, 2008Forgive the emotional aspect of this next column, as I’m still sick from the result of the Cowboys sucking against the Giants yesterday. But I’ve been asking myself “What’s Next for the ‘Boys” today and will share what I’ve come up with. (And it just so happens that the Cowboys lost their biggest personnel man when Jeff Ireland went the way of the fish in Miami, so Jerry (if you’re listening), consider this my application for Director of Player Personnel.
1. Bye-Bye Julius Jones. If yesterday taught us one thing, it’s that Marion Barber can and should be the feature back for the Cowboys.
1b. Trade Roy Williams for a 7th round pick. If we could get anything better, we should, but he’s completely lost his value as a run stopper and big hitter and we all know his trials in pass coverage. I’d rather re-sign Quincy to chase DB’s as I’m sure he’s kept in shape running from the cops.
2. Draft a bigtime receiver prospect. OR sign Randy Moss as he is a free agent in 2008. I can only imagine……..
3. Move Andre Gurode to guard or teach him how to snap in the shotgun formation.
4. Solidify the secondary after we release Roy Williams and Jacque Reeves. Anyone will do…
5. Do what it takes to keep Jason Garrett.
That should get the boys started and we should have plenty of time to make the important moves that need to be made, you know, since we lost….again.
And just like that….
January 14, 2008…..one of the most entertaining and promising seasons in Dallas Cowboys history is over. An uninspired performance against a team with a sub-par quarterback and a pieced together secondary extended Dallas’ streak to 11 years without a playoff win.
Stupid penalities, dropped passes, bad defense, poor play-calling and awful clock management were too much for the ‘Boys to overcome. Multiple distractions in the weeks leading up to this game took their toll. And I’m not talking about Romo’s trip to Mexico. I find it pretty disheartening that the offensive game plan and the offensive line both fell apart yesterday. Funny that offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and offensive line coach Tony Sparano were off interviewing for jobs all throughout the break. You can’t convince me that didn’t play a role in yesterday’s collapse.
Though this loss is going to take a good long time to get over (I don’t see my nausea subsiding anytime soon), we have to turn our sights to next year. We have a great foundation in place and two first round draft picks in April. The Cowboys can definitely improve for next season.
Whoever goes on to play New England in the Super Bowl will be destroyed, and there is a new trend of teams who lose the Super Bowl not even being respectable the next year. Hopefully that will happen to Green Bay and give Dallas a clear path to the promised land next year.
Though after all the heartbreak the Cowboys, Mavericks and Stars have put us through recently, I don’t know if I can take another “wait ’til next year” moment. Something good has to be on the horizon for Dallas. It just freaking has to…..
Our Social Security
January 10, 2008I believe in the midst of an election year it’s important to look back on the history of certain hot-button political issues. Social Security is always a touchy subject, especially with “hand-out happy” Democrats. So, let’s take a peek back at how this whole mess got to where it is today.
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program as part of the New Deal. He promised:
1. That participation in the program would be completely voluntary.
2. That the participants would only have to pay 1 percent of the first $1,400 of their annual incomes into the program.
3. That the money the participants elected to put into the program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year.
4. That the money be put into the independent “Trust Fund” rather than into the general operating fund, and therefore, available only to fund the Social Security program, and no other government programs.
5. That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income.
Many people receiving Social Security benefits now can see that the federal government is taxing 85 percent of the money that was supposedly “set aside” to fund this program.
You may also be interested in the following:
Q: Which political party took Social Security from the independent ‘Trust Fund’ and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon B. Johnson and the Democratically controlled House and Senate.
Q: Which party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security withholding?
A: The Democratic Party
Q: Which political party started taxing Social Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the ‘tie-breaking’ deciding vote as president of the Senate, while he was vice president of the U.S.
Q: Which political party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?
A: That’s right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved to this country, and at 65, began to receive Social Security payments. The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into the system!
Howdy Neighbor!
January 8, 2008This news item is about a month old, but I’ve continually forgotten to post it until now. What can I say, I’m getting old. Anyway, the interesting tie-in from this story is that the perpetrator not only has Dallas-area ties, but he used to live three houses down from me. He’s a really great kid, and I don’t hold these transgressions against him at all. I mean, who hasn’t participated in a drunken dorm raid only to find some wise ass RA trying to throw you out? The only difference is when a normal student gets caught, he spends the night in jail and gets a hefty fine. When a football player at Nebraska gets caught, it’s splashed throughout the national media. I feel for Patrick and his family. Like I said before, they’re actually wonderful people.
One Among Us is Old…er…
January 8, 2008That would be Steve. Happy Birthday, buddy. Here’s to you getting plastered at lunch today and taking the rest of the afternoon off to continue the debauchery…
RE: A Big Hire on the Hilltop
January 8, 2008I don’t hate SMU, I just hate some of their fans who seem to be stuck in the 80s thinking that they are still a formidable powerhouse that can compete with other D1 universities. I also don’t think their little ”Pony Up” campaign hit the target. But maybe that’s just me…
A Big Hire on the Hilltop
January 7, 2008Word has just come down that SMU was successful in luring June Jones away from the University of Hawaii. I know the other contributors to this blog have quite the disdain for ol’ SMU, but personally I would love it if the Ponies could get back on track. I realize the success of the early 1980’s will never be duplicated. However, it would be great to have a respectable, if not nationally-ranked, D-1 college football team in Dallas. Even without a successful big college program in town, Dallas is still the best sports city in the country. A successful and competitive SMU program would be the icing on the cake.
All that said, I’m still not holding my breath. It’s been 20 years since the “Death Penalty” and they still haven’t recovered.
